Four practices to enhance your Pilates routine

Are you looking to elevate your Pilates workouts? It turns out that simple rituals can be the key.

This year, I had an epiphany about how small daily rituals can significantly impact one's life. I shifted my perspective from considering these rituals as chores to embracing them as acts of self-love. The results on my mental, physical, and spiritual well-being were profound. Here are some suggestions for rituals that can enhance your Pilates performance.

My Stretch Ritual Creates Space

I've adopted a kitchen stretch ritual. Instead of mindlessly snacking while waiting for dinner, I choose to stretch. Start with a calf stretch by placing your forefoot against the kitchen bench and lean towards it. Then move on to a quadricep stretch, ensuring you maintain a posterior tilt of the pelvis with your knee pointing down. Another favorite is a chest, back, and shoulder stretch using the kitchen bench for support. Extend your chest forward, keeping your body parallel to the floor.

My Pilates Ritual Involves Rolling

Many people own foam rollers that often collect dust. It's time to grab yours and start rolling while watching TV. Remember not to foam roll too aggressively; aim for about 60% of your pain threshold. If you're making a strained face, you're rolling too hard. Go slowly, focusing on the denser areas, and notice the difference after a week or two.

My Pilates Ritual Kicks Off the Day Right

A 10-minute Pilates ritual next to your bed can be a game-changer. Start with Pilates bridging, book openings, and a mermaid stretch to mobilize your spine. Focus on your breath. If you're short on time, incorporate it later in the day. It's 10 minutes dedicated to yourself and your spine. Have your own back.

My Pilates Ritual Is About Hydration

I've made it a ritual to drink water whenever I'm driving somewhere. Staying adequately hydrated makes me feel more energized, improves my skin's hydration, facaids digestion, and ensures my joints and fascia remain well-lubricated. There are many more benefits to explore if you're considering incorporating this ritual into your life.

Regardless of your Pilates routine, select a ritual or try a different one each day. Dedicate yourself to an act of self-love, and witness the positive changes in your mind, body, and soul.
